Despite the forgiving nature of earth in terms of structural parameters, it is vital that sound manufacturing and construction practices be followed to maximise the potential of the medium.

Earthbuilder consultant Dr Steve Burroughs has for many years, in collaboration with the University of New South Wales, been involved in research and development of earth construction. By studying historical sites, current projects around the world and analysing literally thousands of soil samples, a comprehensive protocol for earthbuilding has been established.

Due to varying geochemistries around the world, care must be taken in selecting soil types for the building of earth structures. An approach that performs well in the Middle East, for example, may not be suitable for Africa.
